The State of Fleet Safety

ADAS & DMS

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and DMS (Driver Monitoring System) are systems designed to monitor driver behavior and keep drivers safe. They do this by providing real-time alerts to drivers. ADAS includes features like lane-keeping, lane straddling, and tailgating alert along with monitoring, which help drivers by warning them of potential hazards and unsafe conditions.

DMS uses cameras and sensors to monitor the driver’s state, detecting signs of fatigue, distraction, cellphone usage, and other risky behaviors to promptly alert the driver to take corrective actions. These systems significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents by keeping drivers informed and aware of their surroundings and their own driving behaviors.

ADAS and DMS have come a long way since the initial conception of the technology. Initially, these systems offered basic functionalities like simple collision warnings and lane departure alerts. Today, they have evolved into sophisticated solutions that provide comprehensive monitoring and real-time feedback. ADAS now includes advanced features such as tailgating detection, lane straddling detection, and traffic/stop sign recognition, enhancing driver awareness and vehicle safety. Meanwhile, DMS has progressed to using high-precision cameras and sensors to monitor driver attentiveness, detect signs of fatigue or distraction, and issue timely alerts to prevent accidents.

Challenges With Current Technologies

While these systems have advanced overtime with newer technology, commercial fleets and their unique use cases have mostly been ignored by OEMs and third party solution providers alike. On top of this, existing solutions currently present in the market have so far been subpar and don’t offer an all round experience of trackability needed for commercial operations. 

To start off, current market solutions are bulky and take a significant amount of time to set up. Some solutions even require you to bring out a tape measure and manually input distance values within the camera in order to calibrate it. This poses big operational challenges if you want to install these systems on a large number of vehicles. Sensing risky behaviors by these systems is also a major problem; most third party vendors in the market today have AI models to detect behaviors for ADAS and DMS, but these models are fairly inaccurate, and don’t detect behaviors with much precision.

The in cab alerts fired off by today’s systems are either laggy, inaudible, or don’t fire off at all. This causes a lack of trust from the driver in the technology and allows them to repeat risky behavior as they think that these system don’t work. 

The other problem is the customizability of these behaviors. Commercial fleets come in all shapes and sizes. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other. Existing solutions provide a cookie cutter experience that only works best for fleets that define the majority of the vendor’s customer base, leaving fleets that have different requirement out. Visibility is also another issue plaguing market solutions today. Existing cameras and sensors sold on the market as ADAS / DMS solutions require near perfect lighting conditions to operate “normally”, and fall apart at the first sight of challenging lighting conditions. Some solutions do try to mitigate this with night vision cameras, but fall back into the trap of having inaccurate AI in the first place, which doesn’t really help much.
